SheepShaver is an open source runtime environment which virtualizes a PowerPC-based Macintosh computer. It runs natively on systems with a PowerPC processor, and can emulate a PowerPC processor on systems without one. The software is cross-platform and can be used on a variety of operating systems. It has become useful for Mac OS X and macOS users as the ability to run PowerPC software was phased out with the adoption of Intel processors, and the discontinuation of Rosetta since Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

History[]

SheepShaver was originally released as commercial software for BeOS in 1998. However, with the closure of Be Inc., it was released to the open source community in 2002.[1][2] The name is derived from "ShapeShifter", an earlier Mac emulator for Amiga OS.[3]

Ports of SheepShaver exist for multiple computing platforms, including BeOS, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows NT. A fork for Apple Silicon, such as the Apple M1, is in development.[4]

Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, SheepShaver is freeware, and its source code is available on GitHub along with that of Basilisk II, a 68k Mac emulator.[5]
