Steam is an online software distribution service developed by Valve Corporation.
History[]
Steam was initially launched for Windows on September 12, 2003.[1] Support for Linux was added on February 14, 2013.[2]
Support for macOS[]
Support for Mac OS X was added on May 12, 2010.[3] On February 15, 2024, Steam ended support for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave), effectively ending its distribution of 32-bit games for the Mac. Fewer than 2% of Mac users were still using such older operating systems at the time.[4][5]
Support for macOS 10.15 (Catalina) will end on February 15, 2025. This is due to Steam's reliance on Google Chrome, which is embedded within its software.[6]
