Steven Daniel Baker (born 1981) is a distinguished engineer at Apple who focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning.


Baker grew up in Morton, Illinois and attended the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora. He received a B.A. in computer science in 2003 from Cornell University.[1]


Baker worked as an engineering intern for GE Healthcare and SpeechWorks from 2001 to 2002 while attending Cornell.[1]


Baker joined Google in August 2003 as a software engineering intern in core search relevance. He eventually rose to become a principal software engineer in March 2011, and then a distinguished engineer in October 2014, specializing in algorithmic question answering.[1]


Baker left Google with other fellow engineers in August 2015 to co-found Laserlike, where he became the chief science officer, working on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to follow news topics.[1][2] The startup raised US$24 million and released a smartphone app for Android and iOS.[3][4]


Baker joined Apple in November 2018 as a distinguished engineer in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).[1] Apple also acquired Laserlike by March 2019 and withdrew its mobile app from the market.[2][3] According to Baker's LinkedIn profile as of March 2021, Apple is hiring.[1]
