The StyleWriter II was the first model to support GrayShare.
The StyleWriter line was Apple Computer's brand of inkjet printers, targeted mainly towards consumers. They produced print quality that was better than the dot-matrix ImageWriters, at a lower price than the LaserWriter line. All were based on Canon print engines and were primarily connected through the serial port.
History[]
The original StyleWriter was introduced in March 1991 as monochrome model. Costs were reduced by eliminating a separate raster image processor (RIP) and networking hardware from the controller board and relying on the Macintosh computer to calculate all QuickDraw instructions.[1] The original was also the only model that ever supported the Apple IIGS.[2]
The line later included two portable models (Portable StyleWriter and Color StyleWriter 2200) and many color models. GrayShare (later known as ColorShare) allowed them to be shared on a LocalTalk or EtherTalk network through a host Macintosh.[3] One oversized inkjet model, the Apple Color Printer, was released in January 1993 without StyleWriter branding.[4]
