The Super Bowl is the annual championship playoff game between the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL) since 1966. It one of the most watched sporting events, causing its airtime to be highly valued and sought after by commercial sponsors such as Apple Inc.[1]

Apple runs its first Super Bowl ad in years during Super Bowl XXXIII on January 31, 1999. It features HAL 9000 from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey to explain that Mac OS does not have a Y2K bug, like many other computers of the day.[1] However, a lingering 2020 bug would not be fixed until Mac OS 9.0.4 was released in April 2000.[2]

2004[]

Apple and Pepsi collaborate to make a commercial announcement during Super Bowl XXXVIII on February 1, 2004 of a giveaway of 100 million free songs though the iTunes Store. The promotion is a big hit for Apple, but Pepsi had issues getting yellow-capped bottles to market in time. The yellow promotional bottle caps also had a design defect which allowed download codes for iTunes to be read without buying the bottle. At the end of the promotion, only about 5 million out of the 100 million available download codes were redeemed.[1][3]

Apple Music sponsors the Super Bowl LVII halftime show, held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on February 12, 2023. Apple replaces Pepsi as the longtime sponsor of the event after committing US$250 million towards a multi-year deal.[4] Rihanna is the headline act of the show, marking her first live performance in years, while visibly pregnant.[5] An estimated $21.5 million in brand exposure is generated for Apple during the event.[6]

Apple Music sponsors the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show, held at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada on February 11, 2024. Usher is the headline act of the show, two days after the release of his Coming Home studio album. Special guest performers included Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R, Lil Jon, Ludacris, and will.i.am. The event could be watched through CBS, Paramount+, or the NFL app.[7][8]

2025[]

Apple Music will sponsor the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, to be held at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 9, 2024. Kendrick Lamar has been announced as the headline act of the show.[9][10]
