The Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is an adapter dongle that was released by Apple in 2012 to allow computers with Thunderbolt 1 or 2 ports to be connected to Ethernet over twisted pair cables.
Usage
The adapter includes a Thunderbolt cable and can be used to add a wired connection to Ethernet with support for up to 1000BASE-T (Gigabit) speeds. Is is also useful for the addition of a second port for use as a router or for link aggregation.[1]
Alternatives
For computers that do not support Thunderbolt, another option is to use the older Apple USB Ethernet Adapter which supports up to 100BASE-T speeds, or third-party USB-C adapters.[2]
