visionOS is an operating system developed by Apple for its Vision Pro augmented reality headset. Both were announced on June 5 at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference.[1]
Development history[]
realityOS had previously been identified as an internal project at Apple Inc. It was believed to be in development to provide an operating system for an as-yet unannounced AR / VR device.
Work on a project known as "rOS" for a forthcoming headset codenamed T288 had been reported as early as November 2017, after ARKit had been publicly released with iOS 11.[2] An early headset prototype was based on existing iPhone components.[3] The continued existence of the project had been revealed again in February 2022 with references to "realityOS" discovered in App Store upload logs.[4] It had also been discovered in open source code posted to GitHub by Apple.[5][6]
