Weather is an app developed by Apple to provide meteorological forecast data. It originally supported iOS, then watchOS in 2015, and then iPadOS and macOS in 2022.
Description[]
History[]
The Weather app became publicly available with the release of iPhone OS 1 in the first iPhone in 2007. It used weather data from Yahoo!, which itself was being gathered from The Weather Channel. Former Yahoo! board member David Kenny became the CEO of The Weather Channel and orchestrated to provide this data to Apple directly and in more detail, starting with the release of iOS 8 in 2014. Yahoo! reportedly acted too late to save the deal.[1] It attempted to salvage the situation by releasing its own Yahoo Weather app before iOS 8 was released.[2]

On March 31, 2020, Apple acquired the developer of popular weather app Dark Sky.[3] The Android version was shut down on August 1, 2020 and paid users received full refunds.[4] Its features and API were integrated into Apple's own weather software with the release of iOS 15 in 2021. However, Dark Sky will continue to receive updates until the end of 2022.[5]
API[]
Apple's weather data is accessible through the WeatherKit API, which incorporated features from Dark Sky's API. WeatherKit can provide up to 500,000 fetches of weather data per month through the API with Apple Developer membership; tiers for increased volume of access is available at additional cost.[6]
