A website refers to a collection of content (such as web pages) made available by one or more computers on the Internet running a web server process.[1]

A particular website is usually identified by the hostname portion of its URL. Multiple hostnames may actually map to the same computer in which case they are known as "virtual servers".[1]

The world's first website went online on August 6, 1991. It was set up on a NeXT Computer System at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) by Tim Berners-Lee.[2]
