Background[]

WWDC 2020 was the first Worldwide Developers Conference to be held virtually in an online format, due to the COVID-19 outbreak that temporarily closed all of Apple's retail stores at various times around the world.[7][8] WWDC 2021 (and WWDC 2022 to some extent), were also held online in this manner due to the ongoing pandemic.[9][10] However, like in 2022, WWDC 2023 will have a live component at Apple Park with developers and students selected at random to attend from among the following groups of qualified applicants:[3]

Apple has also held annual scholarship events with the conference,[11] such as the Swift Student Challenge, which were held virtually from 2020 to 2022.[8][10]
